Learn How Voluma Can Add Volume to Your Cheeks

If your face has developed wrinkles and a sunken appearance that makes you look older than your years, there’s help thanks to the newest hyaluronic acid filler, Juvederm® Voluma®. The injectable filler increases volume in your cheeks and mid-face, giving you a more lifted and youthful look.

Compared to other hyaluronic fillers, which last six months to a year, Voluma lasts up to two years. That’s one of the reasons Jennifer Armstrong, MD, who is a Voluma specialist, uses it in her practice. If you're looking to restore your cheeks' volume, here's some information on Voluma and why you should consider it.

How does Voluma work?

Your body produces hyaluronic acid naturally to maintain your skin's strength, elasticity, and moisture levels. Voluma functions by restoring hyaluronic acid levels, thereby helping to enhance tissue structure and add volume to your cheeks. As a result, it restores your face's shape and youthful contour.

Am I a candidate for Voluma?

Virtually anybody who has experienced volume loss in their mid-face is eligible for treatment. Patients with poorly defined cheekbones also make good candidates. If you are allergic to products made with lidocaine or the proteins in Voluma, you would not be a good candidate for the treatment.

Dr. Armstrong provides a full examination and assesses your medical history to establish whether it's safe for you to have Voluma filler injections.

What factors contribute to facial or cheek volume loss?

Common signs of aging are the loss of facial fat and the weakening of facial muscles, which in turn results in the loss of volume in your cheeks, causing facial lines, wrinkles, and sunken cheeks. The change in your appearance doesn’t just make you look older; it can affect your self-confidence and image as well.

Two main factors contribute to the loss of facial volume:

Extreme weight loss

When you lose a huge amount of weight really fast — whether from dieting and exercise or an illness — your facial fat breaks down, leaving you with sunken cheeks and eyes, fine lines, and wrinkles.

Hormonal changes

As a woman’s body ages, it doesn't produce as much estrogen, which helps retain your facial fat. Lower levels of estrogen during perimenopause and menopause can trigger the loss of facial volume.

What to expect during treatment

You can expect the Voluma injection treatment to last about 15 minutes to a half-hour. The treatment involves small needles, which are almost painless because of the numbing cream applied for your comfort and Dr. Armstrong’s gentle technique.

She makes some marks on your face to offer symmetry guidance as well as identify the position of the blood vessels.

Dr. Armstrong then injects the filler above the bone. Most patients say they feel nothing. In fact, some patients assert that it's more comfortable than other fillers, which require injection deeper into the layers of your skin tissue. Most patients require one to two syringes of Voluma to obtain the desired outcome.

Once Dr. Armstrong injects the Voluma, she massages the area to make sure there's proper distribution.

After treatment, you can resume your ordinary activities. It's normal for mild swelling, redness, and bruising to occur at the site of injection. These effects are temporary and generally subside within two to four weeks.
