Dermal Fillers Q & A

What are dermal fillers?

Dermal fillers are cosmetic injectables that reduce the appearance of lines and add volume and fullness to your face. The fillers Dr. Armstrong uses are made from Hyaluronic acid, it has been used since 2003.

For over 100 years physicians have been developing ways to restore volume and structure to aging skin. In the 1930s, hyaluronic acid was discovered throughout the body maintenance of skin volume and hydration, eye volume and shape and joint lubrication and cushioning.

In 2003, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) approved the first hyaluronic acid dermal filler for the correction of wrinkles. Currently, in medicine, hyaluronic acid-based dermal fillers are the fastest growing non-invasive aesthetic procedure in the United States, according to the American Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery.

Juvéderm™ has become the most popular of the hyaluronic gels with our patients. Juvéderm™dermal filler, approved by the FDA in 2006, with its soft feel and natural appearance, as well as its ease of use for lip augmentation, makes it Dr. Armstrong’s favorite as well. Juvéderm dermal filler offers a high level of control for the doctor, allowing for individualized, tailored facial contouring and for achieving a smooth and natural look.

What are the benefits of dermal fillers?

Dermal fillers can dramatically improve your look. Dr. Armstrong uses dermal fillers to:

  • Plump up lips
  • Fill in cheeks
  • Smooth out lines and wrinkles
  • Lessen the appearance of scars
  • Remove the shadow from underneath your lids

Dermal fillers can also reconstruct deformities in your face.

As an aesthetics specialist, Dr. Armstrong may use different types of dermal fillers to give you the best results.

What are the five levels of formulation?

A special advantage of Juvéderm wrinkle filler is 5 levels of product formulation which improve deep folds and lines, moderate wrinkling and the fine lines found around the lips and eyes.

The product formulations include:

  • Juvéderm Ultra: a highly cross-linked formulation for more versatility in contouring and volumizing of facial wrinkles and folds
  • Juvéderm Ultra Plus: a more highly cross-linked robust formulation for volumizing and correction of deeper folds and wrinkles
  • Juvéderm Voluma: for volume in the cheek area that lasts up to 24 months.
  • Juvéderm Vollure: stretches with the face and chases away marionette and laugh lines for up to 18 months.
  • Juvéderm Volbella: the softest of fillers for lip lines and soft lip augmentation and to remove shadows under the eyes.

The juvéderm dermal filler was developed using a proprietary, technologically advanced manufacturing process that results in a malleable smooth gel. This malleability allows easy flow into the skin, creating a smooth, natural look and feel.

What can I expect during the injections?

Before Dr. Armstrong begins injecting the dermal fillers, she maps out a plan for where on your face they will go. As a physician with an eye for beauty, Dr. Armstrong knows exactly where to place the injections to give you the look you want.

Before treatment, she cleans your face and applies a numbing agent to reduce any discomfort. Then, with great care and precision, she injects the filler into the specified areas and massages it into place.

The entire procedure takes an hour or less. You may have some swelling after treatment, but an ice pack can immediately reduce that side effect, and you can go right back to your usual activities.

Most importantly, the results of dermal fillers are immediate.

How long do results last?

With good skin care practices, your dermal fillers can keep your skin smooth and plump for up to a year. Dr. Armstrong provides guidelines on how to care for your skin after treatment, but she emphasizes the need to protect your skin from the damaging rays of the sun.
